Quick take: The Good Shepherd
Last year's Matt Damon spy movie, The Good Shepherd, has one big thing in common with the one currently in theaters, The Bourne Ultimatum. They're both about the personal costs of doing the dirty work for one's country. But where Bourne tallies up that cost in graphic detail, Shepherd accounts for it one word of dialog at a time. Make no mistake, this is a well-acted and mostly well-crafted film. It's also smart, parsing the ideals and grim necessities of mid-20th century American foreign affairs without the naivete of typical Hollywood movies. Shepherd is worth two hours and 48 minutes of your time if the Bourne movies and Breach left you wanting even more. But as you hit Play, keep in mind that it's not a thriller, it's an informer.

The good thing about Matt Damon movies is that even if they're bad I can just watch Matt the whole time, but come to think of it there haven't been any bad Matt Damon movies have there? Unless he was in that Ocean's 9356 crap-- was he? The Talented Mr. Ripley was unbelieveable. I guess I just associate Matt and Ben Afflick with eye candy. Of course Mr. Gigglie's career hasn't done so well. I hope Wes Anderson's new Dajeerling is good. The Life Aquatic... was the worst movie ever made. I love his other movies so much. Underwater had the worst opening of all time. A Bergmanesque 10 minutes of hell and then Bill Murray with a drink in his hand and an animated goldfish. Maybe Owen Wilson should go back to screenwriting - he might feel better. Oh - the screenwriter for Life Aquatic wrote The Squid and the Whale one of my favorite movies. I cried so much. Mermaids with Cher is also one of my faves. I see a theme going on here.

Hi Linda,
I'm curious to hear those old songs. I put my e-mail address on my MaydayBlue page, but it looks funny because I spell it all out (for technical reasons) -- globalityorg at yahoo dot com.
